WHAT IS THE MYSTERY ARTEFACT SEEN IN THE PICTURE BELOW?

Congratulations to K and Jennifer Ferguson, who were absolutely on the right track!

This piece, found at Grand-Pre, is the metal lock plate from a musket.

Since that hunk of metal may be a bit obscure, here’s what it looks like on being x-rayed:

  1. Hi!
I’m Denise from Saskatchewan, Canada. I am currently studying Classic and Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Saskachewan in Saskatoon, and have completed first year.
Looks to be some kind of daggar, or knife. The holes in it look like they’ve been machined in somehow.
Interesting! Looking forward to finding out what it is! :)

  2. Looks like a piece of rifle assembly

  3. I would have to agree with K. It is the wooden lock plate of a flintlock fireing system with the metal priming pan and shear spring still attached. Looks like a brow bess because of how flat the locking pan is. Not that I would really know. Really if I hadn’t read K’s post I would have guessed that it was a door lock.

    • Wow. I have so much to learn. :)

  4. I am dead sure it is the lock plate of a flint gun Jennifer. I’m not sure if it would be a Brown bess though, maybe slightly older the spring gives it away. I only guessed because my Uncle owned a couple and taught me how to fix them :)

  5. Oops I didn’t read that we were right ha
